UCLA’s LiAngelo Ball Arrested in China Over Shoplifting Charges

LiAngelo Ball, younger brother to Los Angeles Lakers star Lonzo Ball and a freshman at UCLA, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly shoplifting while the UCLA Men’s Basketball team was in Hangzhou, China.

Ball, along with teammates Codey Riley and Jalen Hill, allegedly stole from a Louis Vuitton store close to the team hotel just outside of Shanghai.

ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reported that Chinese police interrogated players from both the Bruins and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, UCLA’s opponents on Friday night, at the Hangzhou Hyatt. Georgia Tech confirmed that its players had been questioned but that they were cleared to rejoin the team.

According to ESPN’s Arash Markazi, all three UCLA players involved are now being detained at their hotel in Hangzhou until the legal process is over. This could take days, weeks, or even months.

The players are free to move around within the hotel and are allowed visitors, however, they will not be permitted to rejoin the team in Shanghai and will not be able to leave the country until this matter has been settled.

Chinese law calls for anyone convicted of “robbing public or private property using force, coercion or any other method” to face a fine and anywhere from three to 10 years in prison.

Ball, whose father Lavar is the notorious head of the family-owned Big Baller Brand, was not expected to start for the Bruins this season, although he was expected to offer some scoring off the bench.
